Online Databases for Japanese Historical Research

Princeton University Databases Portal for access to databases available to Princeton students through the university. With the exception of Japan Knowledge, which requires use of VPN, all databases can be accessed from off campus by simply logging in when prompted.
  • Japan Knowledge "Reference collection including encyclopedias, an economic weekly journal, maps, people in the news, etc. Includes access to the Jitsu, Nihon Kokugo Daijiten (=Nikkoku Online) and Nihon Rekishi Chimei Taikei dictionaries."
  • JSTOR "Full text archive of core journals in select disciplines. Journal issues from the most recent 3-5 years are usually NOT available electronically through JSTOR."
  • Magazine Plus  "Indexes more than 50 million articles from 8,500 Japanese language journals. Updated weekly. Covers humanities, social sciences, and science and technology."
  • Project Muse "Full-text articles from more than 100 scholarly journals in history and the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences."
FREE
  • CiNii "(Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator, pronounced like "sigh-knee") is a database service that enables searching of information on academic articles published in academic society journals or university research bulletins, or articles included in the National Diet Library's Japanese Periodicals Index Database."
  • National Diet Library 国立国会図書館 The national library in Japan.
  • Tokyo Historiographical Institute 東京大学史料編纂所 "These databases, which were first constructed in 1984, are a product of ongoing co-operation between researchers attached to the Historiographical Institute, archivists, publishers, computer engineers and many others."
